Dyslexia is associated with learning disability. Kids with dyslexia often find difficulty in reading, writing and decoding words. Dyslexic kids have almost all the similarities with their peers, except learning disorder. Some of the dyslexic kids are intelligent.
Have you observed your kid with the same difficulty? Not sure about the cause? You can take your child to the Multi Sensory Learning centre, where the experienced tutors do the evaluation and tests for dyslexia. After the test gets over, the tutor will let you know the result. The result usually shows the exact cause and will allow you to know whether your kid is dyslexic or not.
More than one tests are done for assessing these skills while determining whether the kid is dyslexic or not:
- Phonological Awareness
- Decoding
- Reading Fluency & Comprehension
- Rapid Naming
1. Tests Are Done To Evaluate Phonological Awareness
In this test, the evaluator will ask your kid to segment words and blend sounds. For instance, the evaluator may ask your kid to fill in the middle sound of the word let say “ba” .. “anna”. Pronouncing the middle sound will be very difficult, for the dyslexic kids. Generally during the test, words that are easy to pronounce are given to a child. However, the level of difficulty increases as they grow old by adding more syllables.
2. Tests Are Done To Evaluate Decoding
In this test, the evaluator will ask your kid to read aloud a single real word & pseudowords also called fake words. A pseudoword looks very similar to real words but it doesn’t have any meaning like migheron or hiff. Decoding pseudowords will test your kid’s ability to applying rules to match the unit of sounds with their written symbols for sounding out words.
3. Test Done To Evaluate Reading Fluency & Comprehension
In this test, the evaluator will examine the time taken by your kid to read the comprehension. This test will also make the examiner understand the fluency level of your kid.
4. Tests Are Done To Evaluate Rapid Naming
In this process, the evaluator will give some cards to your kid in rows which mainly contains various types of items. There will be different cards – some of them will have numbers, letters, colours or the pictures of some common objects. The evaluator will ask your kid to start naming these items. This will be recorded by the evaluator. Through this process, the evaluator can examine the time taken by your kid.
All the above tests are done together in the various teaching centres of Melbourne. These centres have well-designed Screening And Diagnostic Assessments. The assessments are designed based on the specific kid’s deficit areas. You can, therefore, take your kid to a renowned teaching centre for the evaluation and testing purpose.
